First, hear some #FileMakerFamous speakers share their tips, trick and faux pas. Then, pair up with a mentor and get on the fast track to be #FileMakerFamous yourself.
If you have ever wanted to speak in public but are hesitant for #reasons, here is your opportunity. The point of this session is to STAND TALL and just do it.
Starting with a quick 15-minute panel, you’ll learn the worst things that ever happened to some well-known speakers as part of their presentations. Hear how they prepare and how they relax to get in the flow. Plus, they’ll share what they’re trying to prove or show while they are on stage - their speaking motivation, if you will.
Then, we’ll spend a few minutes getting mentees paired up with mentors, who will help you prepare your less-than-3-minute presentation on a topic of your choice. It can be about a personal or professional situation, a hobby, FileMaker - the sky’s the limit. The last hour will be open mic.
If you already know you want to mentored or if you are willing to be a mentor, please email Susan Fennema at susan@beyondthechaos.biz.
Crystal Smith will lead the panel of Ernest Koe, John Sindelar, Dave Knight, Martha Zink and Colleen Hammersley on the #FileMakerFamous 15-minute panel. All of them have offered to be mentors and to any mentees willing to give public speaking a shot. Any mentees or other mentors out there who want to get paired up before the session, email Susan Fennema at susan@beyondthechaos.biz.
I'll unfortunately miss out on this, but I thought about the following tips to share at the session this evening:
- Count on internet failing, here at pause I tethered my iPhone as an alternate connection to show web pages.
- The dock and desktop backgrounds are distracting. Clean up your desktop from clutter, use a flat color desktop background and hide your dock. This gives you more screen real estate on the projector screen.
- Before your session walk to the back of the room and try to read the text off the screen. Most of the time you will want to zoom in or use larger fonts so people in the back can read.
- Check in with people in the back of the room at the start of your session to make sure they can hear you. If there is a microphone try and make sure to talk towards that so it picks you up.
- OSX has a built-in zoom utility. System Prefs > Accessibility > Zoom sidebar. When you want to zoom in on code to show it zooming helps a lot to focus on one piece of a script or code.
- Having videos as a backup to any "do it live" presentations that you want to do for your session has saved all of us at least once.
- When your session is over, it's a great idea to make a blog post, share your session resources, and continue to add to your ideas with updates. People that missed your session will greatly appreciate this when checking out your materials.
- Quicktime is an easy way to record your session, just remember to hit the record button.
- Quicktime is also an easy way to mirror your iPad screen via USB.
It's great to see new presenters! Thanks for leading this workshop!
